The girls that wrestle girls aren't as aggressive, they're more laid back. (Wrestling boys) helps a lot. Naturally, guys are a lot stronger than girls. That's a big difference right there. 2.  Amy Perlmutter. December 30, 1993, January 4, 1994, January 26, 1995 and February 4, 1995 Bergen Record articles about Amy Perlmutter, a 112 lb. junior wrestler at Manchester Regional High School.  She won the eight-team Fred Sharkey Memorial tournament at Wayne Hill and was voted a share of the Most Outstanding Wrestler award in a poll of the coaches. She is believed to be the first girl to win such an award in New Jersey high school history. Twice in the Sharkey tournament, Perlmutter was in trouble. She broke out of a headlock to pin her second-round opponent, and burst out of a cradle to pin her title-round opponent. Perlmutter, who bounced back from 5-0 deficits in both the semifinals and final, came off her back to pin Don Bosco Tech's Jason Valente in one minute, 29 seconds in the title match. In danger of losing by fall, the 5-foot-1 Perlmutter escaped defeat with a reversal and then immobilized Valente with a headlock. "He Valente took me down and cradled me and I just broke out," said Perlmutter." The increase in weight from 103 to 112 has not slowed her. "With more weight I'm naturally stronger," said Perlmutter, who benches more than 115 pounds and can do a team-high 20 chin-ups. "Last year I felt weaker because I was losing all that weight. This year since I'm not losing weight, I feel just as strong as any of the guys."  See also February 1, 1992 Bergen Record article describing Amy's first varsity win.  See also March 12, 1989, December 18, 1991, February 1, 1992,  June 28, 1992, and December 22, 1992 Bergen Record articles about Amy.

See also the article (and terrific accompanying picture) in the January 15, 1999 Syracuse Post-Standard, describing Danielle's come from behind win (via pin) in the 119 class over Baldwinsville High School's Larry Klein in her first ever varsity dual meet match.  She fell behind 5-0 in the first period, but rallied to trail by 7-5 midway through the second period.  She then reversed Klein, slipped a half-nelson on him and pinned him at 3 minutes 36 seconds of the match.  Immediately, Bennett was the recipient of a standing ovation from the large audience.  Her win sparked her team, Fulton High School, to a 44-19 win over the previously unbeaten Baldwinsville Bees.  Amazingly, Danielle had weighed in at only 112 lbs. and had planned to wrestle on the junior varsity, but when Fulton had nobody available at 119 lbs., she got the nod.

"As soon as he did, she cradled him from the standing position and put him on his back.''  Haithcock seemed disappointed the match ended so quickly. "I was expecting to wrestle, not having to say I'm done for the day," she said.  Links to articles about Melody:  http://www.fayettevillenc.com/foto/news/content/1997/tx97nov/s20melod.htm

See also February 26, 1999 Dayton Daily News article about Sarah: "Anyone fearing for Bobby McCall's well-being these days can relax. The Clinton-Massie High School wrestler is not losing any sleep and he's not in need of a psychiatrist.  Just because he lost to St. Bernard-Elmwood Place High School's Sarah Van Skaik in the 160-pound consolation semifinals of the Lakota Division III Sectional last week - making Van Skaik the first girl to qualify for a district tournament in Ohio - McCall isn't convinced his life is over.  But being pinned by Van Skaik in two minutes and 30 seconds has made him famous."  "That's what everybody's been telling me," said McCall, a junior. "She knew what she was doing and she got me. That's life."  "But it makes me look at girls differently. I respect them."  It's not as though McCall is Van Skaik's first victim. She enters the district meet, which begins at 3 p.m. today at Xenia High School, with a 7-14 record. And Van Skaik, a senior, is more experienced than McCall, a second-year wrestler. Van Skaik has wrestled since seventh grade.  "She wrestled him tough," Clinton-Massie coach Dan McSurley said. "I think his nerves affected him, the fact everyone in the building was pulling for her."  "She might not hear McCall at the district tournament, but he promises to be in attendance, cheering for Van Skaik. The two have formed a bond, having wrestled three times.  "I wish her the best of luck," McCall said. "People kind of joke with me about (losing to her), especially my friends. I just tell them, "She would have done the same to you.''

1.  Lisa Bisers.  January 17, 1999 Pittsburgh Tribune-Review article about Lisa Bisers, a 112 lb. varsity wrestler at Hampton High School.  See also February 7, 1999 Pittsburgh Tribune-Review article about Lisa, noting her 11-7 record as a sophomore.

"Earlier this season Lisa Bisers proved that she belongs with the boys.  The Hampton sophomore wrestler took third place at the South Fayette tournament on Dec. 18. Bisers lost early, but gained revenge against the same wrestler in the match for third place.    Bisers, who began wrestling in fourth grade, wants to wrestle for a girls team in college. There are just a handful in the country, but this summer Bisers met  New York University's coach at a wrestling tournament in Michigan and Bisers toured the campus while on vacation this summer.   "They want me to wrestle for them," Bisers said.  NYU doesn't have athletic scholarships, but Bisers said that with her grades, a near 4.0 average, she would be able to get a scholarship.   Bisers likes the idea of girls wrestling teams in college, but not in high school.  "I don't want to see that because there would be a lack of competition," Bisers said."

2.  Angel Vandegriff.  December 18, 1994 Knight-Rider News Service article about Angel Vandegriff, a 112-pound high school wrestler who had won three of seven bouts, including pinning two boys at a tournament at William Tennent High School, lost her place on the Kennedy-Kenrick High School team after being told that Catholic League rules prohibited girls from competing in wrestling.  The 112-pound weight class remained vacant on the Kennedy-Kenrick lineup card.

2.  January 28, 2000 article in TheState.com about the growth of girls wrestling in South Carolina, mentioning the following wrestlers:  Elizabeth Grice, along with teammates Suzanna Zupan and Laura Wall, of Dreher High School; Ginny Welch of Lakewood High; Kristen Rollins of Hopkins Middle School, who wrestles at Lower Richland; Alexis Moore of Lower Richland and Janette Ferguson of Crestwood.

Moore, who wrestles at 119, has won five junior varsity matches. Rollins, an eighth-grader at Hopkins Middle School who is captain of the Lower Richland middle school team, also has done well in her first season. The 105-pound wrestler finished second in the Hopkins Middle School tournament and placed in the Taco Bell Invitational. She carries a 4-2 record into the Carolina Invitational, the state tournament for junior varsity and middle school wrestlers, in Rock Hill on Saturday.

Welch and Grice have experienced the high of pinning an opponent. Welch did it once last season against A.C. Flora, and she has four pins this season. Grice finished the season with a 3-6 record.

Tennessee

1.  Jennifer Daugherty.  January 17, 1999 Murfreesborough Daily News article about Riverdale High School senior 103 lb. wrestler Jennifer Daugherty, who finished second in the 100-pound class at the 1998 National High School Girls Wrestling Tournament while wrestling with a broken finger.  During her junior year, having lost the 103 lb. slot, she wrestled at the 112 class and pinned four opponents while winning three other matches on points against guys 12 pounds heavier.   "Mike [the guy she lost the 103 lb. slot to]  likes to talk me up. When guys ask how I am, he likes to play with their minds," Daugherty says. "One guy said, 'This ought to be easy. It's a girl.' That was all I needed to get out there and get after him.  We went to the third period before I pinned him, but it was in front of the student body. And I was like, 'How do you like them apples?' I didn't say it, but I was thinking it."  See also January 21, 1997 Nashville Banner article about Jennifer, which mentioned that Jennifer is also a black belt in karate.  Link to article about Jennifer:  http://www.dnj.com/dnj/1999/01171999/prep.html
